This old vine cuvee has spent 17 months in new French oak and shows it. Rich. Flamboyant. Manicured. And yet the clench of cedary oak, firm. This needs time for the violet, boysenberry, kirsch and sash of black olive, anise and cracked pepper to flow across the oaky totem pole, rather than be sublimated by it.

Very deep, dark, bright and youthful purple-red hue. The bouquet is reserved, with earth, graphite, black fruits and a trace of licorice, the palate full-bodied and massive, concentrated and loaded with tannin. Lashings of oak, well integrated, and a very long finish with firm, drying tannins. It begs for more time. Loads of potential here. A whopper. I wouldn’t open it for a few years, although you could drink it now. It’s an outstanding cellaring proposition.
Red fruits meld with cocoa and spiced nutmeg. Grilled meats, dried lavender, and new leather are defined flavors in this round, well-developed red. Fruit is not jammy – instead, a refined note to plum and boysenberry, with a touch of vanilla.
With fruit derived from 50 to 110-year-old vineyards in the McLaren Vale, the highly concentrated, tannin‑ripe Hardys Eileen Hardy Shiraz is open fermented and basket pressed before maturation in new (25%–33%) and seasoned French oak for 16 to 20 months. Hallmarks of this wine include ripe fruit alongside spiciness and savoury characteristics. An opulent and perfumed wine with ripe, gamey, blackberry and liquorice aromas, spicy nuances and fine, silky, dense tannins.

Hard to discern the verdant cabernet notes amidst the scrum of ripeness and char, but a bit of a work out liberates a whiff of leaf, currant and an arsenal of choco-cherry-vanilla-charred oak. A floozy. We all need them occasionally in our lives, I suppose.
Cigar and cedar and cassis on steroids. Fruit concentration shirt-fronts the firm oak. This feels old-school, though the fruit is pedigreed. Will blossom

An interesting concept that must fascinate marketeers, this has been aged in oak on a gradient of 1-4 inferring char levels. And I thought sophisticated wine was moving well away from ‘char’ oak. What would I know? The wine, despite my resounding prejudices, is seamless. Floral purple scents corral around bitter chocolate and blue to dark fruit references. Plenty of power across a, well, charred piste of manicured oak tannins. Buxom and for those who dig this, rewarding.
Deep purple/red colour, with a rich dark chocolate nose, the palate likewise rich and fleshy, dense and sumptuously flavoured, with lots of char-oak character, but not overdone. Tannins are nicely tailored with the right amount of firmness for drinking young as well as keeping.

Bin D681. Sure it’s medium in weight but the profile is classic. It’s even-handed, fluid, spread with fine-grained tannin, but not defined by it. The palate flows from blackcurrant to mulberry, from cedar wood to milk chocolate, from bay leaves to sandalwood. It won’t knock you between the eyes, but it will mature gracefully, and beautifully.

Deep crimson. Intense dark cherry, blackcurrant, red currant dark chocolate sage aromas with dusty, spice notes. Well-concentrated juicy red and dak berried wine, with plentiful fine chalky/ al-dente textures and underlying cedar/ spice complexity. Finishes brambly/ leafy firm and long. Attractive medium-powered cabernet with good fruit definition and vinosity. 14% alc Now – 2028.

Bin D680. A flush of musky, resiny, creamy oak marks this as ambitious from the start. The fruit beneath has both a fleshiness and a friskiness, its bright plum and red licorice flavours freshened further by a splash of mint. Hard to argue with its quality.

Aromatic grenache (47%) meets sweet-fruited shiraz (43%) meets spicy mataro (10%) in this very smart and sassy GSM. More sophisticated and complex than many of its ilk, this is a keeper thanks to some finely balanced fruit-oak-tannins. Viscous and mouth-filling, black-blue fruits, attractive spice, chocolate, a touch of mint with fab presence and length.
