Houghton was founded in 1836 by a syndicate of three British Army Officers and named after the most senior of the three — Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. Remarkably, Houghton has had just 13 winemakers in 175 years. Today, Houghton is one of Australia’s finest, oldest and most awarded wineries in Western Australia.
From the Barley Vineyard in Wilyabrup, Hand-picked, wild-fermented and matured in French barriques. Bright crimson-purple; as always a high quality wine with a compelling bouquet and a rich, layered and extremely long palate. The tannins do their duty, and the oak is of high quality. The more you go back to it, the better it tastes.
Deep, brilliant red/purple colour with a lifted, herbal, aromatic bouquet incorporating a hint of mint, The wine is elegantly-framed and intense, powerful and fleshy with lovely texture and balance. No sign of astringency; the tannins are ample but ripe and smooth. A delicious wine.
Leafy, red and black fruits, something of an OMO perfume about it, along with chocolate and cedar. Medium-bodied, but well packed with a dense graphite tannin (though not quite to the usual level of intensity), perky acidity, and a firm long finish, a slight warmth from alcohol, but pretty much in check. It’s a very good wine, though perhaps a lesser release this vintage.
Has distinct floral notes showing leafy tobacco and black olive characters. Chalky tannins, with red berry and mulberry. It’s more in the red fruit spectrum. A very good wine showing balance and poise. From a single vineyard, this has come together extremely well.

From the 48yo Justin Vineyard in Frankland River, includes (as ever) 8% malbec, hand-picked and sorted, small open fermenters, 10 days on skins, wild yeast, matured for 16 months in French barriques (50% new). Magnificent wine. It would make Jack Mann glow with pride and proclaim ‘it is resplendent in its generosity.
A powerhouse cabernet from the famous Justin Vineyard in Frankland River. Huge bolt of blackcurrant and dark raisiny fruit aromas greet the nose. The palate is packed with deeply concentrated black fruits and amply supported by firm assertive tannins – a feature of the vintage – and a decent belt of oak. But as always, the balance is faultless.
The earthy-scented Jack Mann Cabernet Blend predominantly derives from cabernet sauvignon vines planted in 1971. The vines are descendants of the mysterious Frenchman’s Block, a long-forgotten patch of Swan Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Small-batch vinification and maturation in new (50%) and one-year-old French oak barriques for 16 to 18 months typically leads to a wine with crushed blackcurrant, mulberry and herb garden aromas, voluminous richness and muscular but round tannins.
