Wine production in Mornington Peninsula dates to 1886. The predominance of the surrounding water, and the cooling winds that blow up from the south, east and west, combine to give the region a wonderful climate that makes it ideal for growing the noble, late ripening varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Stonier’s story begins with Brian Stonier who was one of the first vignerons in the Mornington Peninsula. He planted Chardonnay in 1978. Our Reserve Chardonnay represents a blend of highly distinctive and mature vineyard sites located on the southern edge of the Mornington Peninsula. The fruit for this wine is sourced from mature vineyards aged over twenty years. Complex with aromas of lemon, lime and grapefruit. Building citrus flavours on the palate, with a puckering grapefruit-like acidity.

After the first planting of Chardonnay in 1978, followed by Pinot Noir in 1982, Stonier released its very first Pinot Noir stamped with the 1986 vintage. Even as a young wine there is a nice textural aspect of integrated flavour and tannin, with a fruit spectrum that is more dark cherry and brooding raspberry, rather than bright red fruits. There is an appealing savoury tannin framework which will no doubt become more expansive together with the palate over the coming 12 months and beyond.
