94.2% cabernet sauvignon, the balance petit verdot, merlot and shiraz. Destemmed whole berry open ferments, matured in a mix of oaks and ages, the most significant 15% new French hogsheads for 15 months. Yet another wine to shine thanks to the vintage. Elegant, medium-bodied, blackberry/cassis, fine tannins, and good oak management.

Machine-harvested, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 6-8 days on skins, wild and cultured yeast, matured in French hogsheads (65% new) for 18 months, 5% merlot blended in. All handed on a plate ex the vintage, the vineyard, and the courage to use this amount of new French oak, and no attempt to over-extract.

Six generations of family winemakers dating back to Thomas Hardy in 1853 – renowned father of the South Australian wine industry. One of Australia’s oldest and most well-known wine brand. The Hardys wine brands are headed by Thomas Hardy Cabernet Sauvignon, Eileen Hardy Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz; then the Sir James range of sparkling wines; next the HRB wines, the William Hardy quartet; then the expanded Oomoo range and the Nottage Hill wines. The ‘Big Company’ slur is ill deserved – these are some of Australia’s greatest wines.
“Very bright purple wine full of lively colour. On the nose, slightly closed but with rich black fruit and a hint of spice and a layer of cocoa and mocha notes. Tannins are wonderfully smooth and rounded, ripe. Almost off-dry in the sweetness of fruit but with excellent integration of alcohol and body to give this wine a sweet fragrant finish. This wine offers a layered complex and expressive wine for the price.” — Fongyee Walker MW

A 47.9/36.5/15.6% GSM blend separately vinified, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 6-8 days on skins, matured for 16 months in used French puncheons and hogsheads. Holy trinity or holy vintage? I’ll take both, for they have both made the wine so enjoyable, a tumble of red and purple fruits in a skein of silk.

The 22nd release of Meshach celebrates the great ’12 Barossa Valley vintage. The colour is still deep crimson-purple, setting the pattern for the bouquet and palate to follow. A wine of the highest quality in the Olympian class of Barossa Valley shiraz, seamless, calmly powerful and perfectly balanced. Black fruits dominate, but this is no one-dimensional power play, with hints of licorice, bitter chocolate and graphite. The tannins and oak contributions are perfectly placed and paced.

Meshach is a generous Barossa style with a ripe, dense palate packed with fruit, chocolaty tannins and supported by malty/roasted-chestnut new oak. Meshach develops attractive choc-berry/panforte characters with age.
94 points Huan Hooke – The Real Review
Deep red/purple, youthful colour, and the bouquet screams coconut and vanilla toasted oak. The wine is full-bodied and very edgy, with bitter, aggressive oaky flavours predominating. A massive wine, outrageously oaky and demanding patience. I can’t imagine wanting to drink this for another four years, minimum. In other words, not till it’s at least 10 years old. But it has undoubted concentration and richness.
As it is, blackberry fruit provides the core of the palate, new oak a significant support, along with the expected oak tannins.

Deep, rich red with a fleck of purple, excellent colour for its age. The bouquet is tremendously rich in fruitcake, Christmas pudding/panforte kinds of aromas, chocolate too, and dried figs. A hint of mint emerged later. A lot of oak has been employed, but it’s not overly oaky as such. A big, solid, full-bodied wine of concentration and density, with a long, resonant finish.
Sturdy cabernet with plenty of heft. Generally well balanced. A big, Barossan, tannin-strewn red as much as it is cabernet, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Ferrous qualities, blackberries, gum leaves and choc-mint. Lots of dry, rusty tannin. Still looks youthful, still has many years ahead.
Average 25yo vines from across Eden Valley; matured in seasoned French oak barrels. St Hallett’s deep reach into the great sites of the Eden Valley and its blending wizardry forge an exquisite take on this great vintage. At once concentrated and vibrant, spice-laden and enduring. Impeccably constructed tannins draw out a finish of pinpoint detail and lingering persistence.
Established in 1944 by the Lindner Family, St Hallett represents the very spirit and soul of winemaking in the Barossa. From the beginning, St Hallett understood the importance of saving old vines and focusing on varieties that thrive in the Barossa region – particularly Shiraz. More than 70 years on from these humble beginnings, St Hallett has established a reputation for making wines with exceptional quality and character.
Deep red/purple colour, and a rich black-fruit aroma, laced with star anise and licorice, the palate rich and fruit-sweet, sumptuously-flavoured and opulent, the tannins ample but very soft and supple. A luxurious but also elegant wine.
The first edition of this wine, it has a thread of wet stones and spices with a peppery thread, dry spices and blackcurrants. Some violets, too. The palate has some really bold, rich blueberry and blackberry flavors. Quite bold, but fresh. Succulent, dark plum-stone finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Exclusively in magnum. From 25yo vines northern Barossa. Matured in seasoned American oak barrels. True to name, the mighty northern Barossa comes alive with depth and impact. Yet, crucially, this boasts the lift, detail and precision that set the modern St Hallett apart. Full, vibrant purple, it brims with crunchy blackberries, black cherries and satsuma plums, laced with exotic spice. Refreshing acidity and enduring fine-grained tannins complete a long finish.

Very dark, saturated purple/red/black colour, with a similarly concentrated aroma of tar, blackberry, herbs, machine-oil and graphite, with a generous component of smoky char oak. The wine is very full-bodied and dense, concentrated, chewy textured and long, with masses of supple tannins. This is a whopper, with a huge future ahead of it.
A nod to the traditional, full-bodied Barossa Valley shiraz style, this has a rich array of blackberry, blackcurrant, earth, lead-pencil and beef-stock aromas with a strong, tarry thread, too. The palate has such a bold, full-bodied style that is saturated with blackberries and really intense, bold tannins. Big, delicious and balanced. Northwestern Barossa sourcing here. Magnums only, this is custom made for collectors and cellaring.
The apex wine of the portfolio, sourced from a collection of heritage vineyards with an average age of 87yo. Quite fragrant, red and black fruit of surprising freshness and elegance, with unwavering line and length. And there’s a spicy complexity too, to add more interest. Sophisticated drinking that will mature gracefully for years.

Serious old-vine character here with plum, light prune, wet-earth and tile character. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and a flavorful finish. Juicy and delicious. Drink now or hold.
The Reserve brings the individual vineyard components together. Ample colour and flavour but with a certain level of restraint. It’s a taut style. It tastes of peach, grapefruit, toast and cedarwood, a touch of lactose/honeycomb thrown in. Lovely length, a touch of mineral there, though it still feels coiled. It’ll be better in a year or two.
