Our Heritage

Drawing on a proud heritage in Australia over 180 years with the founding of Houghton winery in 1836 and the first grapes treaded at Hardys winery in 1853, Accolade Wines has evolved into a global premium wine company, producing some of the world’s best-known brands.

1836

Houghton established in Western Australia just 7 years after Western Australia was founded as a colony, making it the 3rd oldest wine brand in Australia.

1838

John Reynella of Chateau Reynella was the first to plant vines in South Australia in 1838 and built the first underground cellar in Australia, which still exists on the grounds of Accolade Wines Head Office today.

1853

Hardys, established in 1853 by Thomas Hardy near Adelaide in South Australia. Thomas Hardy is the first to export two hogsheads of Australia wines to England.

1944

The Lidner Family began making fortified wine from a shed under the St Hallett name in 1838. The winery established in 1944 has been owned or part-owned by a member of that family ever since.

1976

Petaluma was founded in 1976 by Australian winemaking icon Brian Croser, with the sole objecive to produce ultra-premium wines by carefully selecting within a particular Australian region, suited to a chosen variety.

1978

Stonier was one of the first wineries to be established on the southern edge of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula in 1978 by Brian Stonier and his family.

2002

The Banrock Station Wetland Complex was listed as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convection on Wetlands.

2003

Constellation Brands acquired BRL Hardy creating the world's largest wine business.

2009

UK Bottling Facility (~A$100m) - Constellation Brands invest in a state-of-the-art bottling facility - 'Constellation Park' (later renamed 'Accolade Park').

2011

CHAMPS acquired 80% in Constellation Wines's UK and Australian divisions; renamed 'Accolade Wines'.

2014

Acquisition of Mud House in New Zealand, adding New Zealand sauvignon blanc to supply portfolio.

2015

The Burge winemaking endeavour began in the Barossa in 1865 and was followed by five generations of Barossa growers culminating in the establishment of Grant Burge Wines in 1988, acquired by Accolade in 2015.

2016

Acquisition of Anakena in Chile. Anakena becomes a top 5 Chilean brand in the UK 3 weeks post launch.

2018

The Carlyle Group acquired 100% of Accolade Wines.

2020

Accolade acquires Katnook Estate, Coonawarra. Katnook’s heritage stretches back to 1896, when the Coonawarra’s second vintage was made in the
Katnook woolshed by Scottish immigrant and Australian winemaking pioneer John Riddoch.

2021

Acquisition of Rolf Binder wines, a premium wine producer established in the Barossa in 1955.

2021

Acquisition of Lambrini, the number one brand of perry, or pear cider, in the UK.

Environmental Sustainability

Accolade Wines has a long-term obligation to managing our business in an environmentally responsible manner at all levels, from our vineyards through to our production facilities and distribution networks.

Investments in on-site renewable energy have commenced with solar panel installation at an Australian vineyard and in 2019, a 2.5MW wind turbine at UK’s manufacturing site ‘The Park’, significantly reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions.

The introduction of Garcon bottles for Hardys, Banrock Station, Anakena, a game changing innovative packaging of 75cl flat bottles, made from 100% recycled PET polymer. It takes 75% less energy to make a plastic bottle from recycled material compared with using virgin material, lowering the CO2 emissions by around 79%.

Accolade Wines is the first major wine producer to be fully Carbon Neutral, from vineyard to end of use, across our entire branded portfolio, bottled in The Park.
